This is a re-post from my old website because I'm always being asked for healthy treat options and these are timeless and popular. The recipe is quick, easy, lunch-box friendly and satisfies the urge for sweets and for chocolate!
If you were an Aussie growing up in the 80s, you might remember buying a certain round choc-coconut treat from your corner store. These taste like those only waaay better for you!
They hit the spot for sweetness and chocolatey goodness, with no processed sugar, dairy, trans fats or preservatives.
The healthiest bits:
They're high in soluble and insoluble fibre, which is good for your gut and helps moderate the absorption of the natural sugars from the dates.
The dates themselves are a source of iron, magnesium, B Vitamins and other minerals.They are an alkalising food and quickly satisfy the urge for sweetness.
The coconut adds a dose of easy-to-digest, medium chain fatty acids and helps sloe that sugar absorption too.
The amazing raw cacao adds a big antioxidant boost as well as the deep chocolate flavour, plus more magnesium, iron and zinc.
Much better than most chocolate treats, right?
Be mindful that...
They're still a treat, and although natural, they still contain sugar and calories.
Don't go overboard. Two balls should be enough to hit the spot.
I recommend you make a batch of these and stash them in the fridge for lunch boxes and for all those times you feel like a cheeky sweet snack.
Here's how to make them...
WHAT YOU NEED:
2 cups desiccated coconut + extra for rolling
12-15 pitted fresh medjool dates
1 TBSP maple syrup
1/4 cup raw cacao
3 TBSP coconut cream
1 pinch of salt
Optional 2 tsp tahini
WHAT TO DO:
Make sure your dates a pitted - no one wants a broken tooth!
Put everything except the coconut in your blender. Mix on high speed to make a big ball of sludge. Nice!
Remove your sludge and put into a mixing bowl. Add the coconut and mix by hand until well combined.
Sprinkle some extra coconut into a flat dish.
Use your hands to roll your mixture into small balls, about the width of a 20c piece (do those still exist?)
Roll each ball to coat in coconut.
Enjoy them right away, or place in fridge to harden slightly.
These will keep in the fridge for at least a week. I’m sure you’ll eat them all before any chance of spoiling!
