People are always asking me what to have as a healthy sweet snack and these peanut butter bliss balls always hit the spot!
They're not nut-free, obviously, so be allergy aware..
Also, when it comes to health, sugar is sugar is sugar. It's always a treat, even in its most natural forms, like in this recipe. Overindulging in sugar of any kind is not healthy.
That said, there are better and more health conscious ways to consume sweet foods.
Starting with naturally sweet whole foods is a great way to have your sweets and your health too. Here's how:
Use only naturally occurring sugars to sweeten your foods and drinks. Some examples are maple syrup, honey, raw rapadura sugar or raw coconut sugar, dates, whole fruits etc. Make sure they're their most pure, raw and as close-to-natural state. Many supermarket brands of honey and maple syrup in particular have been heated and processed.
In their natural wholefood state, sugars exist alongside other compounds - mostly minerals and fibre - that slow down or moderate the breakdown of the sugar and subsequent release of glucose into the bloodstream. This means they're less likely to cause rapid blood sugar spikes.
Of course, eating wholefood snacks then delivers a bunch of other health benefits too; from extra minerals and vitamins, healthy fats and fibres and more.
Wholefood sweets are still a treat for sure, but when it comes to health, they're a MUCH better choice than any store-bought sweet, from the perspective both from what's in them, and what is not!

WHAT YOU NEED
8 pitted medjool dates (½ cup)
1 cup (80g) rolled oats
½ cup (130g) peanut butter, drippy
2 TBSP maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of sea salt
WHAT TO DO:
Place the oats in a food processor or high-speed blender and blitz until you have oat flour.
Add the rest of the ingredients and process for 1–2 minutes until the dough is formed.
Using a tablespoon, scoop out dough and roll with your hands to form balls.
Keep the balls in the fridge until ready to eat!
Remember 1-2 balls is more than enough for 1 serving. The good news is the comb of ingredients are sweet, rich and filling enough that you won't even want more than 2 anyway!
